PILATES PRINCIPLES

The Pilates method is unique in that it constantly applies the six original principles: concentration, centering, control, respiration, precision, and flow, together with five parts of the mind: intelligence, intuition, imagination, memory and will/desire. Without intelligence it’s not possible to understand and apply all aspects of an exercise. Using your intuition helps to listen to your body and to allow for with the limitations and possibilities of each exercise at that specific moment in time. Using your imagination helps to improve your understanding of the exercises and supports the memory. The memory is challenged and trained by learning to remember the sequence of the exercises, their details, and the position of the body. Will/desire assures that you stay alert and attentive during a Pilates training and that you will try as hard as you can to perform each exercise in accordance with the 6 principles.

The Mind Body Spirit Connection

Contrology is complete coordination of body, mind, and spirit. Through Contrology, you first purposefully acquire complete control of your own body and then, through proper repetition of its exercises, you gradually and progressively acquire that natural rhythm and coordination associated with all your subconscious activities.

BENEFITS OF PILATES FOR PARKINSON’S DISEASE

Pilates is often recommended by the medical profession as it encourages a balanced development of the body through strength, flexibility and mobility. The exercises are safe and progressive and can be modified to any level of ability. Pilates is focused on controlled movement.

THE MIND BODY BENEFITS OF PILATES

Pilates exercises are great for all bodies. The exercises increase strength, improve endurance, reduce fatigue, and they have a positive impact on your mood, weight management, well being and confidence. All pilates exercises develop core strength, balance, awareness, and they increase flexibility.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Pilates exercises focus on movement that connects the brain to the body. This type of training will assist and improve the performance of every day tasks that are becoming increasingly difficult to perform. Pilates helps to increase brain and body connection by accessing the pathways and through repetition and mindful movement, your muscles are forced to perform the motions properly. When the brain forces those muscles to work, the body becomes stronger, more aware and more controlled.

“Every day tasks like grocery shopping have become easier. I feel stronger and I am able to use the core muscles that we have been training to maintain posture and use them for balance and to help me stabilize myself.” – Delia Lebowitz
